| To host a Connoisseur Competition Wine Tasting Game you will need: |
- Party Invitations
- Connoisseur Competition Numbered Wine Bags
- Wine Bottle Pour Spouts
- Connoisseur Competition score cards
- Cork Screw(s)
- Party Page Registration Number
| Before the Wine Tasting: |
| Send invitations to friends, family or associates. Suggest guests select wines to bring for competition by theme, personal choice, retailer recommendation, or other criteria. |
Visit the Hosting Page for Ideas for wine tasting themes, menus for Hosting and Party Set-up on the Big day. |
| Let the Competition Begin: |
- Select a special area for wines to be checked in and recorded– away from the mingling guests.
- Use the Party Page Set Up Menu (if you have DSL or Cable that allows the page to remain during the competition) or use a Connoisseur Competition scorecard to record the wines in competition. On either form, record:
| - Year |
| - Varietal (example Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay) |
| - Name / Vineyard (many wines have interesting names) |
Visit the Hosting Page for reasons to record who brought this wine, and the price for this wine |
- Assign each wine a random number
- Uncork each wine and Insert a Pour Spout (twist completely)
- Remove all label references that may appear on the cork packaging
- Place the wine bottle in the corresponding numbered wine bag and tie securely
- Place among guests to begin blind tasting
- Ensure the master scorecard or Party Page screen is hidden from guests
Don’t let guests see the registry or peek while the wines are set into the bags. This ensures a true “blind” tasting. |
- Distribute score sheets and pens / pencils.
| Let the wine tasting begin! |
- Guests can taste each numbered selection.
- Score the wine according to each guest’s personal tastes.
- Score 1 (low) though 5(high) in three categories:
I love this wine! A personal response based upon the first sensation!
I love the look and aroma! This captures a wine judge’s criteria.
I would buy this wine! Is it worth buying?. |
- Add the three scores and insert the total from the three categories (maximum points 15) in the Tally Column.
| Calculate the Winning Wine! |
You will now want to find the Competition Score for each wine tasted. This Competition Score is the average score given to each wine by all those who voted. Here’s How: |
- Make sure the name of each guest is on the scorecard.
- Collect scorecards.
- Start with the Wine #1. Add the tallies for Wine #1 from each scorecard.
- Divide the total number by the number of guests scoring that wine (this average score will be between 1-15 points).
- Proceed to the remaining wines and calculate a Competition Score (or Average score) for each one.
The Competition Scores can be written by the host on each guest’s scorecard before handing them back, OR announced by the host with guests writing them in themselves, OR the host can write the score on a place card and affix it to the wine bottle before or during The Reveal. |
| Revealing the Winners: |
- Hand back the scorecards to each guest.
- Take the wine bottles out of the numbered bags and lay them on top.
- Allow guests to record the names of the wines they like.
Register the Party, Wines and Competition Score on The Party Page for future reference! |
